UMTRI: average fuel economy of new vehicles in US in January up from December

The average fuel economy (window-sticker value) of new vehicles sold in the US in January was 25.1 mpg (9.36 l/100 km)—up 0.1 mpg from the revised value for December, according to the latest monthly report from Dr. Michael Sivak and Brandon Schoettle at the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute (UMTRI).  This change likely reflects the increased price of gasoline in January, they suggested.  The value for January is up 5.0 mpg since October 2007 (the first month of their monitoring), but down 0.4 mpg from the peak of 25.5 mpg reached in August of 2014. The University of Michigan Eco-Driving Index (EDI)—an index that estimates the average monthly emissions of greenhouse gases generated by an individual U.S. driver—was 0.83 in November 2016, unchanged from the value…Read entire story

NEVS receives EV production license in China

NEVS receives EV production license in China

The Chinese government approved NEVS’ application to start production of electric vehicles in its manufacturing plant in Tianjin. The electric vehicle production license approved by the Chinese National Development Reform Commission (NDRC) is required in order to manufacture electric vehicles in China. NEVS is the first joint venture company with investors from outside China that is granted a New Energy Passenger Vehicle Project investment approval by NDRC. I am very grateful for the approval we now have received for the electric vehicle production license. It is an extremely important milestone for NEVS, which is based on 70 years of Saab long history. It means that we can take the next …Read entire story

Carnegie-led team creates new extremely hard carbon nitride compound

Carnegie-led team creates new extremely hard carbon nitride compound

New work from a team led by the Carnegie Institution for Science’s Alexander Goncharov has created a new extremely incompressible carbon nitride compound. They say it could be the prototype for a whole new family of superhard materials, due to the unexpected ratio of carbon and nitrogen atoms. Their work is published in the ACS journal Chemistry of Materials. Compounds that are made up of carbon and nitrogen are of great interest to materials scientists, because they can be superhard and very resistant to heat. It’s predicted that some chemical structures of carbon and nitrogen could even be harder than diamonds. If such carbon nitrides were synthesized, they could have a number…Read entire story
