Mitsubishi operations chief says large SUVs and sedans are ‘dying’

Mitsubishi Motors is banking on SUVs as its future, but the company’s operations chief reckons that even some of those high-riding models are on their way out. Speaking with media in Sydney this week, Trevor Mann, global COO for Mitsubishi Motors, said the large SUV could be on its way out – meaning the Pajero Sport could remain as the biggest SUV you can get from the three-diamond brand when the Pajero (proper!) finally bites the dust. Mann said there is no set date to wave goodbye to the Pajero, but when talk turned to a possible alliance solution – following the takeover …Read entire story

2017 BMW 2 Series revealed ahead of September launch

An updated version of the BMW 2 Series coupe and convertible will arrive in Australia in late September this year, at the same time as the similarly upgraded 1 Series hatch. The minor mid-cycle upgrade to the smallest BMW sports car is in line with the Bavarian company’s strategy of making continuous, incremental changes to its model lines. Headline changes include the adoption of Bi-LED headlights by all variants — full LEDs on higher grades — a bigger kidney grille and revised front intake design. There are also more alloy wheel designs to choose from, plus three new colours have been added as …Read entire story

Peugeot Australia in talks with French HQ to expand eight-year warranty

Peugeot Australia in talks with French HQ to expand eight-year warranty

Peugeot Australia could soon become the brand with the most extensive new-car warranty in the country – an eight-year, unlimited-kilometre plan. Back in 2016 the company announced it would back certain models in its range with the benchmark eight-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty, and now the local branch of Peugeot is in talks with its French headquarters, Groupe PSA, to implement a longer warranty as a permanent fixture. Peugeot Australia general manager Kai Bruesewitz told CarAdvice at the launch of the 2017 Peugeot 2008 that the company saw the move to offer the best warranty in the country as more than a promotion, though in real terms that’s exactly what it was: a means to shift existing stock to make way for updated …Read entire story

Genesis G70 drops camouflage in Australia

Genesis G70 drops camouflage in Australia

Nowhere in the world has Hyundai’s upcoming Genesis G70 sedan been spied in a more revealing state than the example shown here. Parked up in the sleepy Victorian alpine town of Bright, 320 kilometres north-east of Melbourne, the new G70 was spied by CarAdvice readers John and Thomas. Previously, the upmarket new mid-sized sedan will be the third model in the offshoot Genesis premium line, following the original Genesis (known now as the G80) and the larger G90 limousine. But, while the G90 will not be built in right-hand drive and thus not offered in Australia, the Genesis G70 is understood to be locked in for our market. Above: an earlier, …Read entire story

Alfa Romeo Giulia Sportwagon scrapped

Alfa Romeo Giulia Sportwagon scrapped

Plans for an Alfa Romeo Giulia wagon have been shelved, with the company believing the Stelvio will fill that market niche. Alfredo Altavilla, Alfa Romeo’s head of manufacturing, has told Car the company has “decided not to do a Giulia Sportwagon”. Altavilla isn’t sure the brand needs a Giulia wagon, given the related Stelvio crossover drives well enough. Indeed, he believes that anyone who would have been in the market for the wagon will end up buying the Stelvio. Rumours abound that Alfa Romeo will use the upcoming Geneva motor show to reveal a Giulia two-door coupe, possibly badged Sprint. That car could take a bow alongside a convertible version. The Alfa Romeo brand …Read entire story

Audi Sport contemplates hypercar program

Audi Sport contemplates hypercar program

Audi Sport has not ruled out developing a small-volume quattro ‘hypercar’ to sit above the mid-engined R8 V10 and rival the imminent, Formula One-derived Mercedes-AMG Project One. Speaking with CarAdvice at the Bathurst 12 Hours GT3 enduro race, Audi Sport boss Stephan Winkelmann said there was potential for a flagship model that tests the value of the brand, a la the in-development, Formula One-engined AMG Project One. Audi Sport — formerly known as quattro GmbH — is the division responsible for Audi’s R8 and RS-badged road cars, and various racing programs. Before taking the reins a year ago, Winkelmann …Read entire story

SsangYong on sales hiatus in Australia

SsangYong on sales hiatus in Australia

The Australian distributor for Korean brand SsangYong has put the brand on indefinite hiatus, and is now focused on clearing stocks and supporting owners. The point of contention appears to stem from the pricing SsangYong wants to command and what Ateco feels it can charge customers, in what is one of the world’s most fiercely competitive new vehicle markets. Ateco’s network currently offers the SsangYong Actyon Sports dual-cab ute, Korando small SUV, Rexton large SUV and Stavic people-mover, the latter perhaps best-known for its use as a maxi-taxi in Queensland. All of these vehicles are sold primarily on price, with drive-away deals that sit below fellow Koreans Hyundai and Kia, and…Read entire story

Holden Commodore Magnum:: New record breaking Nurburgring lap time still on the cards

The time set was 8:19:47, making it not only the fastest ute, but one of the fastest cars to lap the German track. Now, Holden is saying a new record could still be on the cards. Using a Holden Commodore SS-V Redline ute with the previous generation 6.0-litre V8 engine that produced 270kW of power, the blistering time was set by Holden‘s lead development engineering Rob Trubiani.
