Toyota Australia profit slashed due to end-of-manufacturing costs

Toyota Australia profit slashed due to end-of-manufacturing costs

Toyota Australia has posted an after tax profit of $99 million during the 2016/2017 Japanese financial year, with the company taking a big hit due to restructuring costs. The local arm’s after tax profit is down from $236 million in the previous financial year. The Australian operation attributes a large chunk of this to rising costs due to the end of local manufacturing, including consolidating most of its corporate facilities to Melbourne, and reducing its employee count from around 3900 to 1300 by 2018. Above: Current-generation made-in-Australia Camry. In 2016/2017, the company took a restructuring hit of $131 million, compared to $81 million the year before. Toyota Australia also blames “adverse foreign exchange in export markets” for its lower profit in the past financial …Read entire story

Toyota Supra to only be available with auto gearbox?

Toyota Supra to only be available with auto gearbox?

The upcoming Toyota Supra may have become slightly less enticing for purists – if a report by Autocar is correct, Japan’s next performance hero may come solely with an automatic transmission, with no option for a row-your-own manual. Sources told the publication that because the Supra will feature a hybrid powertrain – comprising of a BMW petrol engine, electric motors and supercapacitors derived from the ones in the Toyota TS030 Le Mans prototype – it will only be offered with the self-shifting ‘box. The transmission should be the same as the BMW Z5 on which it is based, likely a ZF eight-speed unit, albeit with different…Read entire story

Mains attraction: Prius Plug-in review

by Lem Bingley Prius Plug-in Rating: 4 out of 5 stars Good: extremely economical, useful solar roof Bad: short EV range, small boot, expensive Price: from £29,195 after the Plug-in Car Grant Toyota’s current Prius is not the prettiest vehicle on the road, and I can’t decide if the styling changes made for the new Prius Plug-in have made matters better or worse. It certainly looks futuristic, particularly in the vibrant Aqua blue that’s unique to the plug-in model. Read more »Read entire story

Toyota C-HR here in Malaysia for first official preview

The Toyota C-HR has finally arrived in Malaysia, officially previewed by UMW Toyota. Before you get too excited though, this is purely a preview, with no solid indication of a local launch anytime soon. The C-HR has not been launched in any ASEAN market just yet, though it has been spotted testing in Thailand. We also sighted the compact crossover at the Singapore Motor Show back in January this year. Anyhow, an 8NR-FTS 1.2 litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine powers the car seen here, which has 115 PS and 185 Nm on tap. The mill is paired with a CVT that sends drive to the front wheels (all-wheel drive is optional in other markets). Other powertrain options include a 2.0 litre…Read entire story

Toyota MR2: 86 chief hints at spiritual successor

Toyota MR2: 86 chief hints at spiritual successor

A successor, of sorts, to the Toyota MR2 could soon be in the works according to Tetsuya Tada, chief engineer of the Toyota 86 and now head of Gazoo Racing. Tada-san told Evo that Toyota wants to complete a three-part sports car range “as soon as possible”. When, or if, the MR2’s spiritual successor surfaces, it will form the last part of a revived “three brothers” strategy that includes the larger 86 coupe and the upcoming Supra. Back in the 1980s and 1990s, the three brothers were the mid-engine MR2, front-wheel drive Celica, and rear-wheel drive Supra. It’s still not clear when the new sports car might pop up or what form the MR2’s spiritual successor …Read entire story
